Mathematics Matters - Host MEC Content Courses

"What was important to me was learning fun ways to interact as a family with math."  - Parent, MEC Math Night

“MEC has been a valuable resource for bringing together all the key components that are involved in the academic success of students. MEC’s vision is to create a community learning team to help ensure a richer understanding of mathematics education in the K-12 school system.”  - Middle School Teacher

“Everyone was engaged at our Math Night. Parents near me were saying that they didn’t realize there were so many ways to solve a problem. It was wonderful to see so many parents involved and wanting to understand how to help their child with math.”  - K12 Teacher on Special Assignment

“MEC courses have impacted my teaching because I now have a much deeper understanding of the mathematics that I teach.” - High School Teacher

Teams of 35 – 80 K-12 teachers who comprise local Math Support Teams (MSTs) participate in the MEC series of summer content courses and six days of leadership follow-up each school year

Teams of 35 – 80 K-12 teachers who comprise local Math Support Teams (MSTs) participate in the MEC series of summer content courses and six days of leadership follow-up each school year.  Math Support Teams (MSTs) work to:

·        deepen their understanding of mathematics and what it takes to teach mathematics in powerful ways

·        align their classroom practice with their new understandings

·        prepare to work with parents and colleagues in support of quality mathematics programs in schools

·        continue mathematics leadership efforts beyond the five-year duration of MEC’s work in partner districts.

In Years three through five after an initial focus on learning mathematics and aligning classroom practice with project goals, MEC’s leadership development provides MSTs with tools and experience to facilitate local professional development sessions.  Districts gain the expertise necessary to sustain mathematics improvement efforts.

MSTs are prepared to facilitate programs such as the following with colleagues and parents:

  • Developing Mathematical Ideas (DMI) series, Educational Development Center (EDC)
  • Video Cases for Mathematics Professional Development (VCMPD) series, WestEd
  • Leadership Cases for Mathematics Professional Development (LCMPD) series, WestEd
  • Supporting School Mathematics: How to Work with Parents and the Public, MEC.
