Numbers Matter – Host Numerical Reasoning Workshops

“Students are actually enjoying math and even complain if I ‘dare’ to skip a numerical reasoning number talk once in awhile.”  - Middle school mathematics teacher

“MEC courses have filled in many of the holes in my understanding of math – holes I did not even know I had.  I have a greater grasp of how math can be expressed and how different forms of expression are interconnected.  I started to use ideas from MEC’s summer course within the first two weeks of school to increase number sense.  Later I used more MEC ideas to increase my students’ algebraic understanding.”  - Middle School Mathematics Teacher

Numerical Reasoning Workshops

The semi-annual one-day Numerical Reasoning workshop series focuses on numerical reasoning as the foundation for success in algebra and beyond. Teachers actively engage in one of four

grade-band groups (K-2, 3-4, 5-6, or 7-10), deepening their mathematical understandings, and transferring new understandings into classroom practice. Teachers learn to examine and build on children's mathematical ideas. Teachers also learn how to use productive questioning to support students as they develop deep understandings of basic facts, the number system, number relationships, and operations.

This MEC component focuses on the importance of helping students develop the knowledge and skill needed to reason numerically. Teachers learn how to build student capacity to think flexibly, choose and use appropriate strategies and algorithms to solve problems, and to verify results and justify the accuracy of their thinking and solutions.

Audience: teachers, mathematics leaders and math coaches/mentors
