I have been doing Number Talks in my High School and Middle School classes for 4 years now, so I was nervous this institute would be too “beginner” for me. But I have learned more today and yesterday than I have in the last 4 years combined. Thank you so much for sticking to your guns and challenging our pre-conceived notions of teaching and what it means to be a teacher. This was AWESOME!

9th Grade Teacher, CA

Knowing that I wouldn’t be put on the spot made it a LOT better for me. I definitely felt safe. I felt excited to conquer the math problems > even the harder ones. That’s a new feeling!

5th Grade Teacher, CA

This experience would be valuable for all teachers to have.

Number Talks offer a valuable method for students to interact in class.  I started my year off with them and students quickly became sharers of ideas, thoughtful listeners, and valued members of the class.  Even when we were doing other activities, students would ask, “Can I share my way of thinking?”

6th Grade Teacher, WA

I am able to see teaching math in a whole new light.  I’m anxious to try strategies such as wait time, authentic questioning and Number Talk protocols into my day-to-day lessons.  It’s nice to focus on how we are teaching instead of always WHAT we are teaching.

Thank you for being gentle with me. I am growing and have real math understanding for the first time in years!

I love Number Talks! This is my missing component in my math program. I plan on using them consistently and hope to share them with others in my district. I felt empowered as I learned how Number Talks work and I look forward to watching my students’ confidence in their math abilities grow. I found my confidence strengthen!! I’m sold!

Teacher, CA

There was so much good stuff to absorb that I will want to use in the coming years. Overall – this was a wonderful two days that highlighted some of my favorite aspects of math! Thank you!

For the first time, I feel like I finally understand what it means, what it would look like, and how I could begin to make learning student centered in math… to truly turn the learning over to them to own.

I didn’t know what Number Talks were before this workshop, and I came away knowing not only what they are, but how to implement them immediately, why they’re so important, and how beautifully they incorporate the CCS mathematical practices within the very bedrock of students’ number sense.

I’ll begin using number talks! And, I’ll do as much inquiry throughout the year as I can in my algebra class!

Algebra Teacher, OH

I think the most important idea or way of thinking that I have taken from these two days is the importance of a safe and non-judgmental environment in the classroom. The fear of being wrong holds many students back from being able to reach their full potential. I think # talks will provide a great avenue for creating that environment as well as allowing students to explore and understand rich mathematical concepts.

I remember being exposed to Number Talks last summer (2015) during the SVMI workshop & thinking it’s sort of like warm-ups but not fully getting number talks. Fast forward to today, end of May 2016, I am able to see & get the importance of using number talks. Initially, the computation done could easily be done on calculators. But I wasn’t seeing the importance of student sharing… having a platform for each of them to share how they see & make sense of math. Number talks helps create a safe environment for students to explore, share, & learn from each other while embracing mistakes.

I will implement number talks into my class now that I have seen them modeled but more so b/c I believe in the importance of making sense of mathematics in community with other learners.
7th Grade Teacher, CA

I wish I had been taught this way. Somewhere along my math journey I was made to feel I can’t do math. BUT ‘playing around’ with numbers and seeing other ways makes me believe I can do it. If I can, my students can! Tomorrow I will go and do number talks. I want my students to LOVE math and become life long learners of math too. I love how this 15 minutes a day can help transform early readers, early mathematicians, into young scholars. Ruth Parker has opened my eyes and heart to learning to teach a new way. Thank you for helping me to be a better teacher.

I will create an atmosphere of trust and respect… and use Number Talks in my high school classroom to encourage thinking.
High School Geometry Teacher, WA

Some teachers are going to feel like they can’t afford the time for Number Talks. However, if they just give them a chance, they will find that it helps solve many of the misunderstandings students have about numbers and operations, and addressing those misunderstandings will buy them time in the end.

The most important idea I’m taking away is that students can become mathematical thinkers and understand math concepts better when they learn in an environment that frees them to explore and share their thinking.

Teacher Sessions – Kelso, WA

Wow – my understanding of Number Talks is so much better now! I can’t believe how we came up with so many and varied ways to do 1 problem. The session was highly supportive, easily applicable, and I can see how it will impact student growth/understanding of number sense. I’ll be using what I learned in my classes tomorrow!

Teacher, Grade 7-8, WA

This session modeled good instruction. We saw lots of ways to think about how we solve problems and gave us many new ways to solve problems. It demonstrated real differentiation and showed us how to meet a range of learner needs. This session was highly supportive!

Number Talk Institute – Anacortes, WA

“This institute is very empowering. I feel I must bring number talkNT_NWESD_Jan2016s to my students. This is crucial and urgent, but even more, I CAN bring number talks to them. I can hardly wait!”

4th Grade Teacher, WA

“Number Talks are a refreshing departure from the mathematics of right or wrong to the mindset of flexible thinking that celebrates habits of mind and the process of making sense of math. This shift supports 21st Century learning and global citizenship.”
